Frequently Asked Questions

Project YES

What is Project YES?

Project YES is a free, online mental health resource built by, and for, young people.

80,000 young people have tried Project YES already. But anyone can use Project YES to build confidence, boost mood, and tackle problems. You can try short activities on your own, or we can connect you to local resources near you.

It works – Science shows YES helps young people feel more in control of their lives.

It’s low-pressure – 100% free, no hidden fees, no ads, no strings attached.

It’s private – 100% anonymous, we don’t collect or sell personal data.

It’s fast – Start immediately, without waiting.

It’s safe – Created and vetted by experts at Northwestern University and Koko. Backed by partners at UT Teen Health.

Why did we build Project YES?

Most young people in the US do not have access to mental health support. It’s expensive, it’s hard to get, and it’s often not built for everyone.

We’re scientists, mental health experts, and designers who worked for years to help fill this gap. We work for universities and non-profits – not companies. We’re not motivated by profits or a bottom line.

More than anything, we’re people. We’ve experienced problems with our mental health, and we’ve struggled to get support for it. We’ve partnered with UT Teen Health to help more young people in Texas get the support they deserve.

How can you use Project YES?

You don’t need to sign up for Project YES.

Step 1: Visit our website tryprojectyes.org/utth

Step 2: Choose the activity that speaks to you

Our activities take 5-10 minutes and cover topics like body image, low mood, goal setting, eating disorders, confidence, self-compassion, self-harm, and suicide safety planning. Try as many or as few as you like.

What happens to my data?

All Project YES data is 100% anonymous. This means no one (not us, not your parents, not your teachers) will know who you are or exactly how you’ve used our website. We won’t ever be able to connect your answers to you.

We’ll ask some questions before, during, and after our activities. Your anonymous data will help us understand how Project YES is working, and how we can improve. By using Project YES, you’re helping make it better for others like you.

Do I have to use Project YES?

No! You can choose not to use Project YES, skip any questions you don’t like, or stop at any point once you’ve started. There are no negative consequences if it’s not right for you.

How is AI used in Project YES?

Project YES is not a chatbot or a program made by generative AI. Everything in Project YES has been pre-written by experts. We do use AI to review and find responses where someone says they may be in danger, or might hurt themselves or someone else. If this happens, we check in on that person privately and direct them to more resources right away.

What if I need more support while using Project YES?

If you need more help while using Project YES, our website will help you find a confidential help line or text line for help or crisis support right away. We can also connect you to local resources in your area.

Can adults try Project YES?

Yes, anyone can try Project YES! If you’re 18 or over, just let us know when we ask for your approximate age. This helps us better track how well Project YES serves young people.
